Being able to explore a text thought to be based on the oldest religious teachings in the world is something The Kabbalah Centre has prided itself on for almost a century. From the moment the doors of the first location opened in the 1920s to the most recent expansion of the group in the 21st century that allows students to study Online or in person at more than 40 global locations the Centre has become a major force in the religious world.
Understanding the work of The Kabbalah Centre also means exploring the work known as the Zohar, a 14th century scripture based on the oral tradition of Kabbalah; before the Zohar was first published in Spain in the Middle Ages the teachings of Kabbalah had been passed down in a secret way using the oral tradition. Like much of the Kabbalah the origins of the text are shrouded in mystery, but teachers of Judaism believe the initial stories were handed to the Biblical figure of Adam by God in the Garden of Eden. The great Jewish Patriarchs of Abraham and Moses are said to have known of Kabbalah and its intricate teachings, which were later encoded into the Bible as the stories of great figures of the Old Testament.
The Zohar itself was one of the first ways the public were given the opportunity to explore this ancient teachings during the Middle Ages; the Zohar still plays a key role in the work of The Kabbalah Centre as the translated version of the original writings forms the backbone of the teachings provided for those embarking on this mystical and spiritual journey. The Kabbalah Centre is still looking to create a link between its students and a divine being, often referred to as the Light that allows each individual the opportunity to create their own mystical link to the God they have followed throughout their lives. As the Kabbalah predates any form of religion known of in the modern world it is studied by followers of many different religions who use the teachings to create a closer union to their own belief system.
The mystical appeal of the Kabbalah Center is as intriguing as it is ancient. What makes the center so fascinating to visitors is its rather unusual approach to the subject of God. While Jewish literature traditionally focused on the outside perspectives of God, Kabbalistic literature took quite the opposite approach. It concentrated on the spiritual aspects of God, a subject that was as novel as it was startling as this method had not been explicitly adopted in the Torah. Kabbalists drew their wisdom from the Zohar, a document written by Rav Shimon Bar.
Before 1922 when the Kabbalah Center was opened, Kabbalah Wisdom had remained a closely guarded treasure by a select few. Although the teachings of Kabbalah date back thousands of years ago, its popularity has always remained relatively small, compared to Jewish teachings about God. Kabbalah focuses on acquiring the concealed knowledge of God was transmitted through oral tradition from Adam to Abraham. Later, it was handed over to Moses.
The Kabbalah Center’s opening was an effort by Rav Yehuda Ashlag to allow public access to the jealously guarded wisdom of the Kabbalah. Historically, the sacred teachings were only allowed to Jewish men aged between 20 and 30 who went through a rigorous learning process under a qualified cabalist. Upon reaching 40, only men that met certain criteria in the society were allowed to learn the sacred teachings. Spreading the wisdom of Kabbalah to the outside world was highly restricted. Ironically, the highly treasured spiritual teachings by the Kabbalists were widely regarded as mysticism by the rest of the Jewish population.
The history of the Kabbalah Centre goes back to the initiative of a few Kabbalists who felt that the sacred teachings should be disseminated more widely. Rav Yehuda Ashlag undertook the task to renovate the Kabbalah and made it accessible to the public. He later left the responsibility to Rav Tzvi Brandwein. Then Rav Berg took charge of the Kabbalah Center and continued to use the center as a platform where the world can learn about the enthralling and ancient wisdom of the Kabbalah.

The teachings, whose main theme is trying to explain the relationship between the physical universe and the mysterious and hard to understand infinity, have their origins in Judaism. While the teachings of kabbalah centre are used in many religions today, kabbalah in itself cannot be regarded to as a religion.
How kabbalah started
It is believed that the kabbalah started within the tradition of the Jewish people. The interesting thing about kabbalah is that it preceded most of the modern world religions and might be the smoke screen behind which the rest of the religious beliefs formed and solidified. The people that mostly use the kabbalah today are those trying to interpret the Hebrew bible in the most basic of its teachings and also other rabbinic teachings.
Not many people really understand the teachings. However, these misunderstandings did not always exist. The problem came in when Christians and other religious groups started twisting and misinterpreting the teachings in order to fit their own religious views. Other activities that have diluted the true meaning of the kabbalah include the tarot reading culture and also the entertainment industry which is trying to make the teachings sound like some form of magic, worsening the already bad view of the religion.
Another common misconception about Kabbalists is that they believe in magic. Well, while there are many things that happen in the natural universe that are not exactly in line with logic, there explanation as to why these things happen are deeper than just labeling it magic. There are teachings within the kabbalah that teach things that may be interpreted as magic; such as the story of the rabbi that created a man from mud and breathed life into him.
These are places around the world where the teachings of kabbalah are made. There is one centre that is found in LA while others have been established in Europe. The centres are set up by instrumental people in philanthropy with the aim of demystifying the kabbalah.
The centres are the ideal manner in which someone that does not understand the teachings can learn more. The aim of the centres is to stop the distortion of the teachings and help people understand the teachings better.
